Conservation Gardening

t isn’t difficult when you know how and we will be happy to advise you on how to achieve an environmentally sustainable garden, and our talented landscapers will help you to do it. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use permeable surfaces and paving for patios, driveways and paths, allowing rainwater to soak away naturally. From October 2008 new planning regulations came into effect requiring householders to apply for planning permission if they wish to pave over more than 5m2 of their front gardens, unless they use permeable surfacing that allows water to pass through it.
  • Consider having a rainwater harvesting tank installed. This will collect rainwater from your roof for irrigating the garden, topping up ponds, cleaning exterior hard surfaces, and even for flushing WCs in your home. We can advise you on the correct size and type of harvesting tank appropriate to your requirements and size of garden, and professionally install it.
  • Select species of trees and shrubs that provide berries for hungry birds in the winter.
  • Plant annuals, perennials and herbaceous plants that attract bees and butterflies.
  • If you don’t have one already, why not have a garden pond – even if you have small children these can be made safe without spoiling their appearance and attraction to wildlife.
  • Use natural wooden log sculptures to provide homes for insects and small creatures.
